Lemon Lemon Cherry, Jeff Kelley

Palm Lounge at The Eureka Inn

Lemon Lemon Cherry (9pm- 11pm)
Jeff Kelley (11pm-mid)

Lemon Lemon Cherry is a duo that makes beautiful music out of a pile of random instruments. Featuring the songs and singing of Chris Parreira (guitar) accompanied by multi-instrumentalist Anwyn Halliday (glockenspiel, melodica, trumpet, piccolo horn). Experimental folk, with elements of blues and trad jazz.

Lemon Lemon Cherry started as an extension of Chris’ solo set. In the early days Anwyn would join him on trumpet for one or two songs at a show. Then she started playing around with a toy store glockenspiel and a melodica that was laying around the house and they both really liked the sound. Eventually Anwyn started playing entire shows with Chris, switching up instruments every other song. They’ve since added the piccolo horn and concertina. The bands name came from a conversation with a fellow musician on tour. Anwyn was comparing the music business to gambling; how it can sometimes be very reliant on luck and, for example, playing songs for an audience is like a slot machine. Every song you play is the equivalent of a pull of the lever and you never know if you will hit a jackpot or if you will end up with lemon…lemon…cherry.

Lemon Lemon Cherry without Anwyn would just be a guy with an acoustic guitar singing folk songs. However, her tasteful musical instincts bring the songs to life with great counter melodies and ever changing musical textures and timbres. There is room for her to experiment and improvise within the songs, something that she does extremely well without overplaying. The songs themselves are mostly in the classic Americana and folk style. Chris is a big fan of great lyrics, some of his favorites are Tom Waits, Gillian Welch & Dave Rawlings, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, The Band, Wilco, etc. Anwyn’s influences are Tom Waits, glam rock, and Tchaikovsky.
