On 12-8-2012, approximately 4:30 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was notified of a stabbing which just occurred in the 1900 block of Ridgewood Drive, Eureka. When deputies arrived on scene they located a 24 year old male and 21 year old female who were bleeding. The male had a head injury and the female had been stabbed. Medical was summoned to the scene to the scene to treat the victims. Witnesses and the victims identified the suspect as Richard Garnett, 44 years. Garnett had fled out the back of the residence as deputies responded to the scene. Deputies located Garnett hiding behind an outbuilding where they took him into custody.

During their investigation deputies learned Garnett resided in the residence and was the victim’s roommate. Deputies learned the female had been stabbed in the back and shoulder with a kitchen knife, and the male had been struck with a wine bottle in the face when he came to the female’s aid. Deputies searched the residence and located a broken kitchen knife handle. Deputies also saw signs that a violent struggle had occurred inside the residence; numerous items were smashed and broken.

Garnett told the deputies he was upset with the victims because of their behavior as roommates.

Both the male and female victim were treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital.

Garnett was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, and violation of probation. His bail is set at $50,000.00.
