The Del Norte County social mediasphere has been on high alert this morning after one person Facebooked her account of what she believed to be a forceful kidnapping in Crescent City last night. Your Lost Coast Outpost was deluged with messages and wall posts when it awoke this morning, along with some indication that the alleged perps were headed south.
We put in calls to Del Norte county law enforcement first thing, and then we talked to a Eureka Police Department spokesperson, who said that she could find no record of her department being alerted to the case.
Finally, a few minutes ago, we were able to get Crescent City Police Chief Ivan Minsal on the line.
Minsal said that the Crescent City Police Department is still actively investigating the kidnapping report, though at this point it has become somewhat difficult to locate the signal in the noise.
“There is a lot of conflicting information on social media, to the point where it has become damaging to [efforts] to sort out the truth,” Minsal said.
He said that the department has talked with two witnesses to the alleged kidnapping, and that they have conflicting stories about what occurred — whether two men forced a female victim, into a car, or whether she entered the car of her own volition. Also, they have only the vaguest description of the men, and the woman, and the car.
Minsal said that Crescent City has had no new missing persons reports in the last 24 hours.
But he wished to underscore that his department is still actively investigating the case, and he urged anyone with hard information about the incident — which is supposed to have occurred on or near Gainard Street at around 9:45 p.m. — to call the Crescent City Police Department: 707-464-2133.
