MLK Had a Dream, Humboldt Has Beans

Martin Luther King, Jr. would have been 85 years old if he were alive today. To honor his legacy, Humboldt is holding a pair of events locally: 

  • Arcata: For years, the City of Arcata has sponsored the Bowl of Beans dinner, taking place this year at the Arcata Community Center — located on Martin Luther King, Jr. Parkway, fittingly — beginning at 5 p.m. In addition to a simple beans and rice (and cornbread!) dinner, the event will feature performances by the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir, Asha Nan and local dancing youth from Arcata Elementary School. $6.
  • Eureka: Humboldt’s NAACP chapter will host a smaller celebration ‘round noon at the Adorni Center in Eureka, featuring speechifying as well as performances by the Arcata Interfaith Gospel Choir — they’re just HumCo’s MLK Day ambassadors, aren’t they — Donna Landry and Boys and Girls Club musicians.
