Ballot Statement

During my first term I have helped move our city forward by listening to citizens’ ideas and concerns and acting on them. I am dedicated to continuing to work to build on the many positive aspects we have created together and continue moving forward into Eureka’s best future.

My hands-on work promoting a safe and compassionate clearing of the Palco Marsh region is an accomplishment I cherish. Many City staff, community agencies, and citizen volunteers worked to help the residents of the Marsh find alternative living arrangements. We now have a beautiful Waterfront Trail in this area that all citizens can enjoy. The clearing of the Marsh has also resulted in a significant decrease of theft at the Bayshore Mall.

Part of the City Council’s job is to pass new ordinances to address issues that confront our City. Panhandling was a serious and troubling problem and I worked on the Panhandling Ordinance allowing police to lawfully stop panhandling. I am proud of the passage of this ordinance that improves the atmosphere of our City.

Work for the future: Advocate for proactive enforcement of our City’s laws; Support and attract more local business, including new opportunities within the cannabis industry; Advocate for a homeless to work program; Champion zoo master plan; Work to create safer and more neighborhood-friendly streets.

Some accomplishments: Panhandling ordinance; Championed proactive law enforcement by working with City and County to change jail release policies; Completion of Waterfront Trail; Worked closely with Community Access Project Eureka to empower local youth. I plan to continue this work; Brought a civil, progressive, positive outlook to all City Council matters.

We still have a lot of work to do. I always show up and am ready to work with you, and for you, to continue devising forward-thinking solutions to the problems we face. We must also celebrate the positive aspects of our community.

Vote Kim Bergel for Eureka City Council.
