Campaign Statement
From Gerald McGuire/Dec. 14, 2023, 1:25 p.m.
My name is Jerry McGuire, and I have qualified as a candidate for the position of First District Supervisor in the March 5, 2024 election.
I grew up in Humboldt County, after immigrating from Scotland in 1960. I became a citizen during my junior year at Eureka High School when I represented Humboldt County in the junior world wrestling tournament around 1967. I am running for First District Supervisor of Humboldt County to bring diversified economic development back to Humboldt County.
The First District encompasses a large part of Humboldt Bay, and I believe our port has not reached its full potential for industry, job creation, and tourism. Logging and cannabis as sources of income for our residents is dwindling, especially for the “mom and pop” businesses, as County regulations have favored larger business operations, and as our current leadership has squandered the historical predominance that Humboldt County once enjoyed in those industries by micro-managing our local private sector.
Development of private property has also been over regulated by our County government, as the results of abatement efforts by the County have been unjustly inconsistent. Consumer issues, such as gas prices, have gone largely unaddressed by our County leadership, as residents struggle with higher costs of living and fewer job opportunities.
I am hoping to bring Humboldt County back to where it was, which was a world-renowned industrial center, utilizing the harbor district and shipping industry as a focal point, to connect and enhance our local economy to the global economy.
As the First District County Supervisor, I will be a dedicated representative that works for the people of the First District of Humboldt County on legislation that actually accomplishes industrial growth. I am asking for your vote in the March 5, 2024 election. Thank you.
