Lisa asks Juan Pablo Cervantes…
Interference in midterm elections
What will you do if this administration sends ICE agents or “observers” with guns to intimidate voters at the polls during the midterms? Is there anything we can do to stop it?

My commitment is simple. I will do everything in my power to ensure that every eligible voter is able to participate safely, accessibly, and without intimidation.
Both federal and state law strictly prohibit voter intimidation and the presence of armed individuals at voting sites. Federal law is also explicit about federal personnel at voting locations. 18 U.S.C. § 592 limits it to extreme situations, like repelling an armed threat to the United States. That authority is narrow and clearly defined. Cross that line, and the consequences include criminal penalties.
California law reinforces this. Intimidation and interference at polling places are unambiguously illegal.
However, our job is to plan for what could go wrong. Our election workers are trained to recognize and report any activity that crosses the line. We’re ready to act in real time, and we’ve coordinated with our local and state partners to ensure protocols are seamless and expectations are clear.
If you see something, say something. If you experience or witness anything that feels like intimidation, report it immediately to an election worker, or the elections office at 707-445-7481. You can also find more information at humboldtgov.org/elections.
I also want to be clear about something else. Elections in Humboldt County are run by your neighbors. We’re here, in the open, accountable to you. This system isn’t faceless. It’s built by local hard working people who care deeply about getting it right.
All we ask is that voters participate. By mail, by drop box, or in person. We’ll handle the rest.
