Your position on Eureka’s Police Department

Will you support them or work to restrict and modify their role?  What are your thoughts on how city government can protect citizens, property, and businesses?

Response

Matthew Owen

I’m a huge supporter of our local law enforcement. Recently during the local George Floyd protests we had EPD Chief Steve Watson and Humboldt County Sheriff Billy Honsal, Jr. walking with the protesters, taking a knee for 8 minutes and 45 seconds and offering their megaphone for anyone would wanted to talk to the crowd. As community leaders they became part of the solution, not part of the problem.

Currently of 20-25% EPDs calls for service are for homeless and persons with mental illness. The EPD has partnered with the County DHHS for CSET (Community Safety Enhancement Team) where their goals is to proactively address the quality of life issues in Old Town and the Waterfront.

I’d like to see a lot more of DHHS social workers pro-actively walking our streets offering services to those in need.
