How many cases have you tried in front of a jury since becoming a public defender?

How many cases have you tried in front of a jury since becoming a public defender?

None.  Decision makers Fleming and Eads have dumped all the cases for plea deals so favorable to my clients that they could not refuse.  Outside of that, I had one case where my client decided to plead guilty against my advice just prior to trial.

I had a sexual assault case, Ms. Eads specialty, in which after wasting all the time and resources needed for pretrial motions and picking a jury, the D.A.’s office admitted to the judge that they could not prove the case.  Inexplicably, they still refused to actually dismiss the case.  The DA then tried to save face by dropping the charge to a misdemeanor.  When my client refused they again admitted they were unable to prove the case.

The DA still didn’t dismiss the case - I had to request the court to dismiss it for lack of evidence. The judge granted my request.

If I hadn’t, would the DA still have moved forward, even after admitting they could not prove the case?  Mind boggling.

Respectfully,

Adrian
