Lowdown: There are Three (3) Musical Groups Playing in Arcata Thursday That Start With ‘Z’

Whatz! This Humboldt Thursday’s out-and-about landscape is dominated by artists filed under “Z!” Yez! That means nothing!:

  • The sounds of Congo and Brooklyn smash together and emanate from any stage that Zap Mama and Antibalas step feet onto. Thursday that stage happens to belong to the Van Duzer Theatre. Absorb a bit of what Zap Mama is bringing into the world in video above, an overview of her latest album ReCreation.
  • Boom-bap, trap and neo-soul are all flavors that can be tasted in the hip hop stew cooked up by Zion I, an Oakland duo with nearly two decades logged. No strangers to HumCo, Zion I will disseminate rhymes to ears assembled tonight in the Arcata Theatre Lounge. Sample “Supreme” off their Masters of Ceremony EP below.
  • A bunch of Humboldt’s most prolific funk jammers will noodle at the Jambalaya tonight as part of a group dubbed The Humboldt Jam Collective, which does not start with a “Z.” But the opening group, a Sacramento funk band named ZuhG, does! Zplendid!
