A 2022 report conducted by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health found that suicide was the second leading cause of death for non-Hispanic American Indians/Alaska Natives ages 10–34 https://minorityhealth.hhs.gov/mental-and-behavioral-health-american-indiansalaska-natives Sabina sat down with Alison Robbins, Executive Director of the Blue Lake Rancheria Tribal Education Agency to discuss how the TEA assists Native and non-Native youth and young adults who may be going through a difficult time in their lives. From the impact of positive role models to how local Native organizations provide resources to the TEA, Robbins details the struggles that students face each day and how sometimes the first step to helping is listening. Randee Litten, an ER nurse with Saint Joseph's Hospital in Eureka, spent two weeks in Puerto Rico with the RN Response Network (National Nurses United) back in October. Arcata Police Chief Tom Chapman came by the KSLG studio to talk about his “Not In Our Town” Letter. His letter addressed racism in our community and the denouncing of the White Supremacist movement. He and Sabina touch on a variety of subjects concerning prejudice and what it means to be a person of color in this community as well as how people can help in reporting racism when they see it. Chief Chapman also speaks about the Fair and Impartial police training set to take place this month. The training is an opportunity for the Arcata Police Department and surrounding law enforcement to come together and talk about racism while addressing concerns of possible bias policing.

The creations are judged by renowned cake decorator Shinmin Li and horror director and make-up effects master Todd Tucker, along with a rotating panel of celebrity guest judges (on the premiere is Shane West). One team will be eliminated after each episode. In the end, only one team will be declared Halloween Wars Champion and will walk away with a $50,000 grand prize. A couple Humboldt Roller Derby Sapling came to the studio to talk with Kim: Wendy Witte aka “Natural Disaster,” and Lauren Gagnon aka “Popper,” accompanied by Popper's mom, appropriately named “Momma Popper.” They discussed the confidence they've built within themselves since they joined HRD, talk about their favorite memories on the track, and share with Kim how HRD has helped them grow during some of the most crucial years of their adolesence. Their first bout of this season is Sunday, March 20 at Redwood Acres. The first whistle is at noon and the event is FREE.

Jeff Mason, who took the crown after winning the Mr. Humboldt 2015 competition, talks about competing in the male spoof pageant which had categories including swimwear, talent, formal wear, and more. Jeff tells Kim about how he got chosen as a contestant, what it was like to compete, and how awesome his mom, friends, and cows were. Oh, did we mention he milked a baby cow on stage?
