• (Sunday, Aug. 27, 2017) Healthcare

This month we dive into the ongoing debate about our healthcare system. We’ll talk about the recent developments with the Affordable Care Act (AKA ObamaCare). California’s 2nd District Congressman, Jared Huffman, weighs in on the issues and elaborates on the feedback he’s received from the public and healthcare providers. Huffman also discusses the Medicare Buy-In and Stabilization Act and California’s SB-562, a bill introduced in the State Senate earlier this year to establish a single payer healthcare system statewide. Northwest Regional Manager of Partnership HealthPlan of California, Jennifer Chancellor, talks about her organization’s role in administering MediCal benefits to citizens in Humboldt and Del Norte Counties. Open Door Community Health Centers CEO, Herrmann Spetzler, shares his perspective on how rural healthcare is changing from previous generations and breaks down what challenges we face in our community amidst these changes. This program is made possible because of sponsorship from Mr. Fish in Eureka.

• (Wednesday, July 19, 2017) Climate Change

Here in Humboldt, we have front row seats for climate change. Sea level rise in one direction. Stronger and more frequent wildfires in the other. Responses are all over the spectrum from President Trump withdrawing the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord to Governor Brown saying “California is all-in on de-carbonizing our economy.” In this installment of KHUM In Depth, we talk with experts and local community members who are working to assess how Humboldt will be affected by climate change and what we could and should be doing about it now. This program is made possible because of sponsorship from Mr. Fish in Eureka.

• (Wednesday, June 21, 2017) KHUM In-Depth: Sanctuary Cities

Just recently, the city of Arcata joined the ranks of Sanctuary Cities, limiting its willingness to help with enforcement of federal immigration laws. As the Sanctuary movement continues, so too the immigration debate which is as heated as ever. In this installment of KHUM In Depth, part two of our look at Immigration, we'll try to find out who is here, where they are, what they do and where we all go from here. This program is made possible because of sponsorship from Mr. Fish in Eureka.

• (Wednesday, May 17, 2017) Sanctuary Cities

Among the hot-button issues currently fueling arguments in families, debates between friends and carving a divide into our country is Immigration. The national and local discussion of Immigration covers a spectrum from job protection to fear of crime and violence to whether the tired, poor and huddled masses are still welcome here. At KHUM In Depth, we plan to try to understand this issue from a number of different points of view and in two parts. In part one, we focus on Sanctuary Cities and Sanctuary States which are jurisdictions that limit in some way their cooperation with federal authorities in the enforcement of U.S. immigration law.

• (Wednesday, April 5, 2017) The Rise of Activism

Now we know what it takes to wake up the kid in the back of the room in civics class. It takes a contentious election and an uneasy feeling about an uncertain future. We open with an episode exploring the exponential increase in activism following the recent election cycle. Bayley and Chuck talk with Congressman Jared Huffman about record attendance at his recent Humboldt town hall and attendees Ross Taylor and Scott Harris. We also hear from Lorna Bryant from the NAACP about the large turnout at the MLK march and Johanna Nagan of Arcata who was motivated to go to the Women's March in DC. This is not just a view from the left, we also get a perspective of the political times from the Chairman of the Humboldt County Republican Party and Political Science Professor at College of the Redwoods John Schutt. To answer the question about why there's an increase in activism we go to a local psychologist, Dr. Jennifer Taylor, to find out what motivates individuals that were never involved before to become active now.
