Craig passed away peacefully at home in Eureka on Saturday, March 12. Over the past few years, he battled multiple health issues.
Craig was born in Oakland to parents Robert and Shirley Maynard in 1954 and grew up in Orinda.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 8 years, Kathleen; his sister, Robin (Kevin) Bartoo of Sebastopol; brother, Skip (Terri) Maynard of Donnelly, Idaho; nieces and nephews, Morgan, Alex, Alyssa, Sierra, Jacob, Caleb, Samuel and Grace; step-daughter, Siobhan (Chuck) Ayres; step-granddaughters Emma and Maya; and his loving and loyal Siamese cat, Buffy.
Craig graduated from Miramonte High School in Orinda, CA, and earned a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from California State University, Chico. He had a successful career as a systems analyst/software developer and retired from Fry’s Electronics in 2016.
During his college years, he spent summers as a camp counselor at Camp Beaverbrook in Cobb, and had many friends and fond memories of his time there. Craig was a Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout.
He loved to take vacations and took several trips with Kathleen to Maui and Kauai, Cabo San Lucas, and a cruise to Alaska. They also attended baseball spring training many times in Arizona to cheer on the Oakland A’s.
He loved jokes and humor, baseball, the Oakland A’s, the Beatles, skiing, camping and model railroading.
Before moving to Eureka in 2018, Craig and Kathleen resided in Oakland.

On March 13, 2022, at about 2:37 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on Larson Heights Road near Blue Lake for the report of a drive-by shooting occurring earlier that morning.
Deputies arrived at the residence and contacted multiple residents at the home, including young children. Deputies learned that earlier in the day, at about 6 a.m., a suspect fired multiple gunshots toward the residence, striking a vehicle parked outside. No one was injured as a result of this incident. Through their investigation, deputies identified the suspect as 33-year-old Rhett Alex August of Eureka.
At about 9:30 p.m. that evening, deputies executed a search warrant at a residence associated with August on the 1000 block of Westgate Road in Eureka. During this operation, deputies deployed HCSO K9 Yahtzee and August surrendered without incident.
August was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of shooting at an inhabited dwelling (PC 246), assault with a firearm on a person (PC 245(a)(2)), child endangerment with potential of great bodily injury (PC 273a(a)), discharging a firearm in gross neglect (PC 246.3(a)), felon in possession of a firearm (PC 29800(a)(1)), prohibited person in possession of ammunition (PC 30305(a)) and criminal threats (PC 422).
This case is still under investigation.

On March 13, 2022, at 8:36 P.M., Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported structure fire on the 2900 Block
of Greenwood Heights Drive. Initially, four engines and a duty officer were dispatched to the incident. Due to
the rural location of the incident and the area not having hydrants, two water tenders were added to the
response.
The first arriving engine found a fully involved detached utility building and attached wood shed, with fire
impinging on the nearby residence and spreading to the wildland. The engine had prepared for a rural water
pumping operation by leaving a supply line at the driveway and laying several hundred feet of supply hose in
to the scene. The engine company then began attacking the fire. The next arriving units supplied water to the
rural pumping operation while additional personnel searched the residence and ensured the occupants and
animals were out and accounted for.
Fire crews had the structure fire controlled in about 20 minutes. Gasoline containers that had recently been
filled repeatedly re-ignited. Fire crews ultimately controlled the gasoline fire with dry chemical extinguishers.
While personnel were fighting the structure fire, personnel from other units attacked the vegetation fire and
contained it within an hour.
The two water tenders that were added maintained a continuous supply of water to the incident. The tenders
were able to successfully access rural water tanks installed by nearby residents and utilize those tanks as
water sources to extinguish the fire.
No firefighters or civilians were injured in the incident. The cause of the fire was accidental and determined
to be discarded ashes from a wood stove that were too close to the exterior of the utility building. Damage
was estimated to be approximately $15,000. Humboldt Bay Fire would like to thank the Kneeland Fire District
for the response of their tender to aid in the continuous water supply needed to extinguish the fire.
Humboldt Bay Fire would also like to remind the public to dispose of completely cooled ashes in a covered
metal ash can outside at least ten feet away from buildings and combustibles on a non-combustible surface,
such as concrete or rock.

Former Cal Poly Humboldt (Humboldt State University) lineman Alex Cappa intends to sign a four-year, $40 million contract with the Cincinnati Bengals, ESPN reports.
After signing a rookie contract worth $3,368,704 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2018, the proposed new deal would currently make Cappa the eighth highest paid guard in the National Football League, according to Spotrac.com.
Tom Brady’s loss will be Joe Burrow’s gain: Bucs’ free-agent guard Alex Cappa intends to sign a four-year, $40 million deal with the Bengals after free agency opens, per league sources.
After winning a Super Bowl with Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in 2021, Cappa is set to join another Super Bowl contender. The Bengals will look to rebound from their Super Bowl loss to the Los Angeles Rams last month behind the arm of young NFL superstar Joe Burrow.
If the deal goes through, Cappa will be the third Humboldt sports star to play for the Bengals. Eureka High School grads Rey Maualuga and Maurice “Mo” Purify both played their rookie seasons with the Bengals in 2009. While, Purify only lasted one season as an NFL wide receiver, Maualuga went on to have a very successful career playing linebacker for the Bengals until 2016.

On March 13, 2022, at about 6:23 a.m., a Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputy on patrol in the Freshwater area observed a truck matching the description of a vehicle that had been reported stolen in the county last week.
The deputy conducted a vehicle investigation and confirmed the truck to be stolen. Inside the vehicle, the deputy observed a female, later identified as 29-year-old Rosamarie Ellen Louise Tello, asleep in the driver’s seat. Deputies awoke Tello and she was taken into custody without incident. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located drug paraphernalia, burglary tools and an unconfirmed controlled substance containing narcotics. While booking Tello into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility, deputies also located over 5 grams of methamphetamine on her person.
Tello was booked on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle (PC496d(a)), possession of burglary tools (PC 466) and possession of a narcotic controlled substance (HS 11350(a)).
Additional charges may be requested as a result of this investigation.

On March 13, 2022, at about 12:27 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the 700 block of Casino Way in Blue Lake for the report of an assault.
Deputies arrived in the area and located a 41-year-old male victim with serious stabbing-related injuries. The victim was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.
During their investigation, deputies learned that the victim was leaving a business in the area when he was reportedly approached by 33-year-old Jesse Christopher McHenry. An argument occurred between the two men and at some point, McHenry reportedly stabbed the victim multiple times. McHenry fled the area prior to law enforcement arrival and was believed to be heading east on Highway 299. Through their investigation, deputies were able to obtain a vehicle description associated with McHenry, in addition to a possible destination of where he was going. Area law enforcement were advised of this information.
At approximately 1:32 a.m., Sheriff’s deputies monitoring traffic in the Willow Creek area, observed McHenry’s vehicle traveling on Highway 299. Deputies conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle and McHenry was taken into custody without incident.
McHenry was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on charges of attempted murder (PC 664/187(a)), assault with a deadly weapon other than a firearm (PC 245(a)(1)) and battery with serious bodily injury (PC 243(d)).
