Humboldt State University is investigating the Women’s Intercollegiate Softball Team for alleged hazing, as well as other possible violations of student and athletic codes of conduct.
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreational Sports and the Dean of Students have placed the team on interim suspension. All athletics-related activities, including the upcoming week of competition, will be postponed pending the results of the investigation.
Hazing is both illegal and violates HSU’s student and athletic codes of conduct. HSU takes issues of hazing very seriously and the welfare of student-athletes is the priority at this time.
HSU’s Office of the Dean of Students has taken the lead role in the investigation, with close cooperation from Intercollegiate Athletics & Recreational Sports.
Due to privacy laws, the details of the investigation related to specific individuals will not be made public.

On April 25, 2021, at about 8:59 p.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies on patrol in the Hoopa area observed a reported stolen vehicle traveling on Pine Creek Road.
Deputies attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, however the driver of the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued. Deputies pursued the vehicle for several miles, and eventually on to Bald Hills Road. California Highway Patrol Officers responded to assist with the pursuit, successfully deploying a spike strip and disabling the vehicle on Bald Hills Road near Lady Bird Johnson Grove. The driver of the vehicle fled on foot south into a heavily wooded area. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.
The suspect is only described as a light skinned male with light facial hair, possibly wearing a purple shirt. Motorists in the area are asked to use caution and contact law enforcement if you see the suspect in the area.
This case is still under investigation.

A Ramey Warrant has been issued for the arrests of William Orsina Mattingly, age 25, and Wyatt Waylon Whitlow, age 35, in connection to the April 23, 2021, robbery in Garberville.
Mattingly and Whitlow were arrested on April 24, 2021, in Ukiah, following a routine traffic stop by the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office. During that traffic stop, Mendocino County Sheriff’s deputies located items believed to be stolen from the Garberville residence.
Today, April 26, 2021, Sheriff’s deputies served a search warrant on the vehicle associated with the suspects, locating additional items linking the two to the crime.
Mattingly and Whitlow are being held at the Mendocino County Correctional Facility and will be transported to Humboldt County following adjudication of their Mendocino County cases. Mattingly and Whitlow will be booked into Humboldt County on a Ramey Warrant for robbery (PC 211) and kidnapping (PC 211).

On April 23, 2021, at about 11:16 a.m., Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a residence on the 3200 block of Sprowel Creek Road near Garberville for the report of an armed robbery.
Deputies arrived at the residence but were unable to locate any persons on scene. While investigating further, deputies learned the victim had escaped to a nearby park during the robbery and was waiting there for deputy contact.
Deputies contacted the victim at Tooby Memorial Park. The victim told deputies that at about 11 a.m., he was outside his residence when two male suspects approached him holding firearms. The suspects reportedly forced the victim to the ground, handcuffed him and then forced him inside the residence. While inside the residence the suspects stole multiple items of value out of the victim’s safe. During the incident, the victim was physically assaulted and was struck in the head with a firearm, causing the firearm to discharge inside the residence. The victim was not shot during this altercation.
The victim told deputies that he was able to escape the residence, fleeing across the Eel River and onto Camp Kimtu Road, where he was provided transportation to the park by a passerby. Following deputy contact, the victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
The suspects are described as two white male adults in their mid-20’s to early-30’s, approximately 6 feet tall with an average build. The suspects were reportedly wearing blue jeans, flat-billed hats and face masks.
The suspects’ vehicle is described as a silver 2015 Honda Accord with an unknown license plate number.
This case is still under investigation.

On Sunday April 25th, 2021 agents with
the Humboldt County Drug Task Force (HCDTF), with the assistance of
the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, served a search warrant on a
residence in the 400 block of North Rd. in Stafford. Agents have been
investigating the home-owner, Kenneth
Lane Sylvies-Pullen (36 years
old) for suspected Fentanyl sales in Humboldt County . During the
service of the warrant agents detained Sylvies-Pullen along with his
girlfriend, Katrina Helen Lane
(34 years old), inside the residence.

agents conducted a search of the residence and located the following
evidence:
Approx. 2 ounces of Fentanyl
Approx. ½ ounce of heroin
Approx. ½ ounce of methamphetamine
Digital scale with Fentanyl residue on
scale and packaging materials
Sylvies-Pullen
and Lane were transported to the Humboldt County Jail where they were
booked for the following charges:
H&S 11351 Possession of controlled
substances for sale
H&S 11378 Possession of
methamphetamine for sale
H&S 11366 Operating or maintaining
a drug house

present at the restaurant the week of April 18th was affected by the outbreak reported by
the Humboldt County Public Health Alert:
Out of an abundance of caution for our tribal members, employees, customers, and the
community, Trinidad Rancheria closed the restaurant to disinfect it and ensure that none of
our staff tests positive before reopening.

KCBY in Coos Bay reports that the crash occurred soon after an Oregon State Police trooper attempted to stop Cory Marcus Orsenico for driving erratically along Highway 101 on the morning of April 22.
“Investigating officers have reason to believe that Orsenico travelled from the slow lane of the three-lane highway to the fast lane, then crossed the double yellow line before intentionally colliding with the vehicle in the opposing lane,” the Coos County Sheriff’s Office is quoted as saying by KCBY.
The Coos County Sheriff’s Office identified Orsenico and the other vehicle’s occupants — 54-year-old Dawn Adams and 78-year-old Jeffrey Adams of Bandon, Oregon — as the three victims killed in the crash.
Orsenico was also arrested by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office in 2014 for a felony warrant out of Del Norte County and possession of 94 grams of marijuana, 82 grams of Hash Oil and Hydrocodone. Orsenico was a resident of Loleta at the time of his arrest in 2014.
