Excavated Slide on Salmon Creek Road

Road construction has resumed on the site of the 2006 slipout above Wayne and Cathy’s old home.  The project was stopped, according to Chris Whitworth of Humboldt County’s Public Works, because of the “…overburden above the excavation.” The county needed to get authorization from FEMA which is funding the project.

Currently large trucks are moving massive amounts of soil from the place and bringing back rock.  The major truck work should be finished by noon tomorrow.  The drivers have been asked to slow down for the remainder of the project.

The rest of the time will be spent installing what is basically a “French Drain” designed to “leech water out…allowing an avenue of escape that wont wash out the hillside,” says Whitworth.  The hope is that the “articficial aquifer doesn’t get dammed up” and the drain will allow the road to stabilize.  The new roadway should be relatively flat between the two ends of the project when finished.

Whitworth thanked the community for their “patience” and ” apologizes for the inconvience.”

Thanks Public Works and FEMA for working on our road.
