– Rather miraculously, a community group that has worked to gain control of Eureka’s old Jefferson School site managed just that yesterday (T-S). The Westside Community Improvement Association had been through several ups and downs over the course of the past few years, but it submitted the only bid at yesterday’s Eureka Unified School District auction. The group managed to scrape together a $610,000 pledge to purchase the school, which it hopes to transform into a community center. Westside boosters at the Humboldt Herald are rejoicing.

The New Zealand mud snail, a new invasive species that has invaded Big Lagoon could pose a serious threat to salmon populations by displacing their traditional food sources. The snails have also been located in the Smith, Klamath and Rogue River estuaries. “They reproduce like maniacs,” a biologist tells the Board of Supervisors.
