The North Coast Veterans Resource Center (NCVRC) invites veterans of all eras to information sessions and free lunch to learn more about their services.  The meetings will be held on Tuesday, December 27th from noon to 2 p.m. at Garberville Veterans Hall and the Mateel Community Center.

“We’re trying to reach out to residents in Southern Humboldt to let them know about ways we can help veterans,” said Rob Amerman, NCVRC Site Director.  “We know there are many vets in need and we have resources to assist them.”

NCVRC operates a transitional housing facility for homeless veterans, offers employment training programs for veterans who are unemployed or underemployed, and provides case management and financial support for veterans and their families to maintain housing stability.

“Our transitional housing facility in Eureka has been open since April and we still have beds available,” said Amerman.  “We’d like to connect with homeless veterans in Southern Humboldt and offer them the opportunity to enter our program.”

NCVRC’s transitional housing program provides dorm style beds, three meals a day, and services and programs designed to help homeless veterans obtain and maintain stable housing and become self-sufficient.  “The program includes classes such as Life Skills, Anger Management, and Relapse Prevention in addition to case management and group and individual therapy,” according to Amerman.

“We also provide employment training services for vets looking for work or looking to upgrade their skills through training,” said Amerman.  “We are currently partnering with College of the Redwoods to provide Green Jobs training through classes such as Solar Photovoltaic, Basic Construction Skills, and OSHA Construction Safety.”

NCVRC also provides assistance to promote housing stability through a Supportive Services for Veterans and Families grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs.  The Veterans Housing Assistance Program (VHAP) provides case management and financial assistance to prevent veterans from becoming homeless.

“The VHAP program is very similar to the Humboldt Housing Now program offered through Redwood Community Action Agency and our partner agencies,” explained Amerman.  “It’s part of the VA’s commitment to end veteran homelessness by keeping vets and their families in housing and giving them the tools to maintain stable housing.”

NCVRC invites all veterans to come to the Southern Humboldt information sessions to meet with staff and learn more about NCVRC’s programs.  For more information, please call 442-4322.

NCVRC is a division of Vietnam Veterans of California, Inc. (VVC).  VVC operates five sites throughout Northern California: NCVRC in Eureka, North Bay Veterans Resource Center in Santa Rosa, Next Step Veterans Resource Center in Menlo Park, Sacramento Veterans Resource Center, and Redding Veterans Resource Center.
