– California will close a full quarter of its state parks and recreation areas, including three facilities in Humboldt County and many more in neighboring counties. The move will save $33 million dollars over the next two years, and is prompted by a $15.4 billion (annual) structural budget deficit.
In other words, this evisceration of the state park system will fix around one-tenth of one percent of the problem. Heckuva job.
– Gov. Jerry Brown is breaking logjams left and right today! He appointed Del Norte County Supervisor Martha McClure to the North Coast Seat on the California Coastal Commission, ending a whole tedious months-long bunch of lobbying over the matter.
– The North Coast Railroad Authority published a Final Environmental Impact Report today, clearing the way for a reopening of the long-dead railroad in Sonoma and Marin counties. Once again, the authority reaffirms that opening the line to Humboldt County is naught but a distant, hazy dream.
