There was a vehicle collision moments ago on 101 between Eureka and Arcata, near Bayside Cutoff. Listeners to KHUM and The Point are reporting that southbound traffic is backed up, and CHP dispatch is talking about one of the vehicles way off the road, 30 feet into a ditch.
Last night there were ongoing reports of minor road slides all around the area. And there was a horrible accident in Manila that left a 70-year-old man dead.
The first rains are always like this. Always, always. It’s not only that we all have to switch mental gears from summer driving to winter driving — it’s that the land itself starts behaving strangely when it takes its first big drink of the year. At least the winds haven’t come up yet. We should start a pool to guess when the first big power outage strikes.
Be careful out there!
(And sadly, the CHP recently changed its dispatch system yet again, which yet again completely borked my @HumboldtCHP thing. I’ll devote some time to that today.)
