Your Lost Coast Outpost has long copped to the fact that it is but a lowly, provincial media outlet with no real understanding of how things work behind the scenes in the great halls of power in Sacramento and Washington. So we are hoping against hope that one of our more worldly readers will enlighten us as to the perfectly reasonable explanation that no doubt exists behind the surface-level conundrum that recently came across our desk.

On Tuesday, the office of Assm. Wes “The Chezz” Chesbro released a fiery call to arms concerning the matter of the enhanced rural fire protection fees that various state bodies are currently kicking around [h/t: D21]. The press release was entitled “CHESBRO leads fight against SRA fee.” The Times-Standard carried a portion of it the next day.

“As a member who represents large areas of State Responsibility Areas, these bills would be economically devastating to many of the constituents I represent,” Chesbro was quoted as saying. “I find it inequitable to charge someone who inhabits a one-room cabin or mobile home on the North Coast the same fee that would be charged to someone living in a million dollar home in the Southern California hills.”

Hold up just a minute, we thought to ourselves. Didn’t we report back in July that “The Chezz” himself voted for just such an inequity? We did. He did.

How can this be?
