Humboldt CO Sheriff’s Press Release:

On 04-16-2012, approximately 6:30 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s office was contacted by a citizen who reported that his cousin, Jerry L. Miller, 36 years old, from Whitmore, California was missing. The citizen reported that he, Miller and another male were hiking in the area of Big Flat, near Shelter Cove, when Miller began having minor health issues. The citizen and his friend left Miller at approximately 11:00 a.m. near an area where a point protrudes into the ocean. The only way to bypass the point on the beach is during low tide. The citizen and his friend continued hiking to Black Sands Beach at Shelter Cove about three miles away. When Miller failed to show up they became concerned for Miller who had pre-existing health conditions.

Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue deputies and volunteers were called out to search for and locate Miller. The United States Coast Guard helicopter was called in to assist, but was unable to help due to weather conditions. Humboldt County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel located Miller at approximately 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday April 17, 2012. He was in a tent and sleeping bag and in good health. He was brought out by Search and Rescue personnel and reunited with his friends.

The Sheriffs Office would like to remind hikers to tell family and friends where they are hiking, when they expect to return, bring appropriate equipment and clothing. This time of year the weather conditions can change rapidly. A cell phone, map or GPS is also very helpful. Keep in mind not all rural areas have cell phone coverage, a cell phone batteries need to be fully charged.
