Fortuna Police Dept. Press Release:

On August 21, 2012 at about 6:30 am, officers with the Fortuna Police Department responded to the 3100 block of College Avenue in Fortuna for a report of a suicidal subject threatening to harm herself.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the subject was in possession of a loaded handgun and very distraught. Officers established contact with three minor children who were in the residence and were able to get them out of the residence and to a safe location.

A Sergeant and an Officer then began attempting to make phone contact with the subject. After initial attempts failed, the department, working with local mental health professionals, requested assistance from the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT). At about 7:40 am, while waiting for the Crisis Intervention Team to respond, a CIT trained Sergeant was able to make contact with the subject in the residence. After counseling she agreed to exit the residence.

The subject exited the residence soon after and was detained without further incident. The 37 year old subject was transported to a local mental health facility.
