From the Eureka Police Department:
On 8-23-12 at approximately 5:51 pm, the Eureka Police Department responded to an automobile versus pedestrian traffic collision in the 1000 block of Fourth Street.
Arriving Officers found the pedestrian victim lying in the #1 lane of Fourth Street with what appeared to be minor to moderate injuries. The pedestrian victim was subsequently transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital for treatment.
The vehicle and driver had left the scene prior to EPD arrival. The driver of the vehicle arrived on-scene shortly thereafter and identified herself to Officers as the driver of the vehicle.
Officers subsequently arrested the driver – Judi Lynn Hawks of Eureka, Ca - for DUI with Injury (CVC 23153a/b) and Hit and Run Causing Injury (CVC 20001a).
The victim/pedestrian later died of his injuries. The Pedestrian Victim’s name is being withheld at this time pending notification of family by the Humboldt County Coroner.
This case is under investigation by the Eureka Police Traffic and Detective sections. Anyone who may have witnessed this collision is urged to contact the investigators at the below listed contact numbers.

It should be noted that this is the fifth (5th) fatal traffic accident, 2nd in the Hwy 101 thoroughfare, in the past eight (8) months within the City of Eureka. This is also the third (3rd) fatal traffic accident where the driver was suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are strongly urged to drive with due regard for traffic conditions at all times. This is especially important as we are rapidly approaching the opening of the new school year.
