Humboldt Co. Sheriff’s Press Release:

Sheriff Mike Downey is pleased to announce the addition of a Humboldt County Deputy Sheriff position, which is completely funded by the Bear River Band of the Rohnerville Rancheria.  Recently Sheriff Downey and Humboldt County First District Supervisor Rex Bohn were approached by the Rancheria who offered to pay for a full time deputy sheriff to patrol the Eel River Valley from Scotia to Fields Landing. The Rancheria expressed a desire to provide additional law enforcement presence in the   area to assist in the prevention and detection of crime, and to increase public safety in the Eel River Valley area.

First District Supervisor Rex Bohn was instrumental in facilitating this agreement. This agreement will supplement the Sheriff’s Office in providing public safety to the Eel River Valley area. The agreement will be in effect for calendar years 2013/2014 with a possible two year extension. The initial two year agreement equates to a financial commitment of $300,000.00. Sheriff Downey expressed his appreciation for the support the Bear River Band of Rohnerville Rancheria has displayed through their desire to help create a safe environment to the surrounding communities.

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office currently has two open deputy positions which it is recruiting for, and fifteen frozen deputy positions due to budgetary constraints. This additional position will enhance public safety during these lean economic times.
