On July 10, 2012, at approximately 8:35 PM, Paul Medero of Garberville, California was the driver and only occupant of a 2003 Toyota Tacoma while traveling eastbound on Sprowel Creek Road, west of Old Briceland Road.  Medero stated he observed a deer enter the eastbound lane, directly into his path of travel.  In an attempt to avoid colliding with the deer, Medero turned his vehicle to the left and then counter steered to the right while losing control of his vehicle.  The Toyota subsequently exited the roadway and overturned as it traveled down an embankment.  Medero self extracted from the overturned Toyota and awaited emergency personnel arrival.  He was transported via ground ambulance to Redwood Memorial Hospital in Fortuna with major injuries. 
 
Medero was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the collision and alcohol or drug impairment is not believed to be a factor.  The California Highway Patrol Garberville Area office is investigation the collision.
