Bomb incident number 2 as detailed by the Humboldt Co. Sheriff’s Dept. Press Release:
On 07-16-2012, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad responded to 1st and G street, Eureka at the request of the Eureka Police Department. A construction crew had dug up a possible explosive device which they found in their sifter. When the two trained explosive ordinance deputies arrived they deployed a robot to examine and remove the device. The deputies determined the device was a military, 155 mm artillery shell, estimated to be 50 to 60 years old. The device was very rusty so there was no paint or markings left on it to determine the manufacturer. The deputies were unable to determine what the device contained. The deputies utilized a specialized trailer to safely transport the device out to a secure area on the Samoa Peninsula where it was rendered safe at approximately 11:00 p.m. on the same day.
The Sheriffs Office would like to remind the public if they locate a suspicious item that could be an explosive to evacuate the immediate area and call 911. Do not attempt to move or handle the item. Many times old explosives can very unstable and detonate easily.
For some reason this account doesn’t mention the part where they dropped the bomb….
I laughed a little at the omission but kudos to folks brave enough to be on a Bomb Squad. They’ve got more courage than I have.
