KHUM’s annual Stop the Violence Start the Healing campaign is now underway. The first week has concluded. To listen to or download week one’s interviews, click on the Stop the Violence Logo. Week 2 will deal with “The Changing Attitudes Toward Marriage Equality.”  Over a relatively short period of time, attitudes in this country have shifted dramatically regarding same-sex marriage. Week 3 will be “Bullying: Community Solutions.” Bullying has received a great deal of attention lately; there has even been a major motion picture recently released on the subject. Schools around the country, and here in Humboldt County, are taking bullying more seriously. Beyond just simple teasing, bullying has been liked to hate crimes, sexualized violence and even suicide.

Each week of the campaign, Cliff will interview specialists, one-on-one, dealing with an aspect of the topic of the week.  Each week of the campaign will conclude with a 2-hour, roundtable discussion featuring experts on the topic.  During the discourse, listeners are encouraged to call in with questions and comments.

The campaign will conclude with a Healing Breakfast, free and open to the public, Friday November 16th from 8am to 10am at the Eureka Woman’s Club on J Street. The breakfast will include pastries donated by Vellutini Baking Company and KHUM Blend Coffee donated by Signature Coffee. There will also be live music from Lyndsey Battle and The True Gospel Singers. Many groups and organizations involved in the campaign will have resource tables and representatives there. The breakfast will also feature a panel of guests wrapping up the campaign’s 3 topics for the year, a keynote speaker, and a monetary award from the Stop the Violence Fund at the Humboldt Area Foundation. The Healing Breakfast will be broadcast live on KHUM and on the Internet at khum.com.

The Stop The Violence campaign began in 1990 when Cliff, was a national radio consultant. WPGC in Washington DC was the first station to embrace this campaign which then dealt mainly with street violence which earned Washington DC the epithet of The Murder Capitol of the Nation. When KHUM began broadcasting in 1996, the campaign came to Humboldt.  Since rampant street violence is not a large issue here, the campaign has focused on the kind of hidden violence that plagues every community.  All interviews will be archived here at khum.com where they can be streamed or downloaded for free.
