CHP Press Release:

On December 1, 2013, at approximately 2200 hours, at the Humboldt Hill Road on-ramp to northbound US-101, for reasons still under investigation, a male pedestrian was struck by a full-size truck.  The truck was described as white in color, lifted, full-size with tool boxes on the side.  The driver of the truck fled the scene and as of 0145 hours todays date, no additional information has been discovered regarding the driver’s identity or vehicle identification.  The pedestrian, a 33 year old male from Eureka California, sustained major injuries and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka, California, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.  The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.   The identity of the male pedestrian is being withheld pending family notifications.

The California Highway Patrol - Humboldt Area responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation.  Emergency personnel from Humboldt Bay Fire, Eureka Police Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and Humboldt County Coroner’s responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.

UPDATE 12:55 A.M.: According to Sgt. Larry Depee of the California Highway Patrol, on Sunday night, a man and a woman were walking northbound on Hwy 101 when the male was struck by a lifted, white full-size truck which fled the scene. 

The injured pedestrian was transported to the hospital but did not survive. The woman was uninjured and the Humboldt Co. Sheriff’s Office took a statement from her.

The highway is no longer blocked. 

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. However, law enforcement would appreciate any assistance that the public can provide.  Please call CHP Dispatch at (707) 268-0000 with any information.

Original post:Breaking News: Details are unclear at this point but a man has apparently been struck and killed by a vehicle near Humboldt Hill. The CHP and Eureka Police are on the scene.

Scanner traffic is indicating that there has been a second accident and both lanes of northbound 101 blocked.
