Press release from Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On 06-29-2013, approximately 4:00 a.m., the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch center received a 911 call with no one speaking on the phone, but yelling could be heard in the background. The dispatcher was able to overhear something in regards to a stabbing, and immediately sent deputies to the 3400 block of Redwood Drive, Redway. California Highway Patrol Officers responded to the scene also and arrived before the deputy. The California Highway Patrol (C.H.P.) Officers located an 18 year old male who had been stabbed. The C.H.P. summoned medical assistance for the injured male. The C.H.P. Officers also located a 17 year old male suspect who they detained for the deputy. The deputy spoke with the male suspect who had injuries around his head, eyes, face and lips indicating he had been beat up. The male suspect told the deputy he was assaulted by six males at once who punched him and threw flower pots at him. The suspect told the deputy he tried to flee from the males and ran away from them, however they pursued him. When the suspect fell down they started kicking him and punching him some more. Fearing for his life, he grabbed a folding knife and started swinging it at the males assaulting him. He stabbed one of the males and they quit assaulting him.

The deputy contacted the stabbing victim at the hospital. The victim told the deputy he did not want to speak with the deputy at that time, but would give a statement later. The hospital told the deputy the victims injuries were not life threatening.

The deputy released the 17 year old male suspect to the custody of his mother and is referring the case to the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office for review.
