According to Sgt. Keith Altizer of the Arcata Police Dept., the 2000 block of Alliance Rd. between Stewart Ave. and Foster Ave. have been closed off by the Humboldt County Sheriff and the APD in order to proceed safely with removing hazardous material. Altizer says that a resident called and asked for help getting rid of what appears to be old artillery shell or shells. The exact details are unclear at this time.
Altizer says that he doesn’t expect that the operation will take a long time. No residents have been asked to vacate the area but the roadway and sidewalks are closed off as a precaution. “

On 7/10/13 at about 1315 hours, a citizen reported being in possession of old military munitions in the 2200 blk of Alliance Rd and wanted them safely removed.
Arcata Police Department contacted the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to assist with removal of the possibly hazardous item.
During the removal, Alliance Rd will be closed between Stewart Ave and Foster Ave to all vehicles and pedestrians.
There is not an estimated time for the roadway to be reopened.
Additional information will be provided when the situation is mitigated.
UPDATE 7/11 7:40 A.M.: The Humboldt CO. Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the item was disposed of near the North Jetty.
APD Press Release this morning:
Following up on yesterday’s press release, the munition was safely extracted from behind the residence by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Department’s Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team transported to a safe location to be detonated.
The munition was rendered safe.
The munition was an old military artillery shell.
