On 7-12-13 at about 9:26 pm, Officers of the Eureka Police Department responded to the 1700 block of Broadway for an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle vs. a pedestrian.
Upon arrival, officers located a subject laying across the northbound lanes of Broadway. Next to the subject was a crushed wheel chair, a broken 40 oz bottle of beer, and other debris. Humboldt Bay Fire Department and City Ambulance personnel responded and soon transported the subject to St. Joseph ER.
Officers contacted and interviewed the driver of the vehicle and other witnesses. As a result of these interviews, it was determined that the vehicle was traveling N/B on Broadway, just passing W. Wabash, when the subject in the wheelchair suddenly wheeled out into the roadway in front of the vehicle. The driver was unable to avoid the subject in the wheelchair and they impacted. The location of the impact was approximately 217 feet north of the crosswalk.
The driver of the vehicle had not been drinking; however the subject who had been struck was intoxicated. The subject was treated at the hospital for minor injuries.
