Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office press release:

On 07-22-2013, approximately 5:30 a.m., a citizen who resides in the 100 block of Stafford Road, Stafford called the Sheriff’s Office and reported he was awakened by his motion alarm system being activated. The citizen looked outside his home and saw a male suspect trying to break into his vehicle which was parked in his driveway. The citizen saw a female standing at the entrance to his driveway acting as a look out for the male suspect.

The citizen ran outside his home and yelled at the suspects who immediately fled the scene. Both suspects ran off on foot towards North Road, Stafford. When a deputy arrived in the area of North Road, he saw a 2003 White Chevy Yukon with Oregon Plates on it with the driver’s side door open. He saw a female walking out of the driveway of a residence carrying a purse full of items. The deputy contacted the female who matched the description of the one the citizen on Stafford Road had called about. The female attempted to avoid contact with the deputy by walking away when the officer approached her and told her to stop. When the deputy grabbed the female she attempted to strike him in the head with her elbow. The deputy arrested the female for resisting arrest. After the deputy questioned the female she identified herself as Malaina Smith.

In the purse the female was carrying, the deputy located a laptop computer that had been reported stolen from Wilsonville, Oregon. There was also a male’s social security card in the purse. A license check on the Chevy Yukon revealed it was not wanted, however after the deputy ran the vehicle identification number on the Yukon, Sheriff’s Office Dispatch advised it was reported stolen out of Oregon and had unreported stolen license plates on it.

Deputies checked the area for the male suspect, however could not locate him.

The deputy determined the home was not her home and she did not belong there. Smith was transported to the Humboldt County Correctional Facility where she was booked on charges of resisting arrest and possession of stolen property. At the Humboldt County Correctional Facility a finger print check revealed she was wanted out of the State of Washington for burglary and her real name was Malaina Luby, 18 years old from the State of Washington. She was booked and released on her own recognizance.

At approximately 9:00 a.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was re-contacted by the male citizen who reported the male suspect was back in the area and he just walked of the bushes. The citizen told the dispatcher he was watching the suspect. A deputy responded to the area and saw the male suspect who immediately climbed over a chain link fence onto US 101. The deputy drove across the Highway and watched the male suspect throw a machete into the grass as the deputy approached. The deputy contacted the male who was identified as Cameron David Wynne, 22 years old from Oregon. Wynne told the deputy he arrived in the area in a White Chevy Yukon with his cousin. The citizen identified Wynne as the person attempting to break into his vehicle earlier. Wynne was in possession of two large backpacks. When the deputy searched the backpacks he located three pairs of bolt cutters, wrenches, screw drivers, a pry bar, a small baggie of methamphetamine, a syringe and a female’s credit card and identification from Wilsonville Oregon, and several credit cards and identification cards belonging to another Wilsonville Oregon couple. The deputy contacted Wilsonville Police Department and the named credit card holders and learned the items were stolen property.

Wynne was arrested for possession of suspected methamphetamine, possession of burglary tools, being under the influence of alcohol and possession of stolen property. He was transported and booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. His bail is set at $25,000.00.
