Humboldt Bay Fire Press Release:
On March 31st, 2013 at approximately 3:18 pm three fire engines, one ladder truck, and two Chief Officers from Humboldt Bay Fire were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 3530 Highland Place. Prior to arrival, dispatchers began receiving calls from multiple reporting parties stating that flames and smoke were visible from windows at the back of the structure.
The first arriving Chief officer reported a single story wood framed residential structure with heavy smoke showing from the garage and from under the eves. Bystanders stated they thought the occupant was possibly still inside. Fire crews initiated an aggressive interior attack and searched for the reported occupant. Fire crews were able to knock the fire down quickly, ventilate the structure, and confirm that there was indeed no one inside.
During the incident, the Arcata Fire Protection District provided coverage to the City of Eureka and outlying areas.
The fire was confined to the garage of the structure with minor extension into the residence. The occupant of the fire was not at home a the time of the fire. Losses are estimated at approximately $33,000. There were no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, but it is believed that it started inside the garage and is not suspicious.
