kasavich

On Friday March 1, 2013 at approximately 7:40 p.m. Correctional Officers responded to an assault within the Humboldt County Correctional Facility. Officers were summoned by an inmate to check the welfare of another inmate who was injured. Officers arrived on scene and found a 37 year old male with numerous injuries to his face and head. After a brief investigation it was determined the inmate was the victim of an assault. The victim had been in custody for one day on a charge of violation of parole.

Officers spoke with inmates in the immediate area to determine what happened. Inmate Christopher Lee Kasavich, age 32 of Eureka, stepped forward and identified himself as the person responsible for the assault. Kasavich told officers that he and the victim had previous issues prior to coming to jail and he assaulted the victim because of the previous disagreement they had. Kasavich was in custody for a felony possession of stolen property and has also been booked on California Penal Code Section 243(d), Battery with Serious Bodily Injury, a felony. His bail is set at $50,000.00 on the new charge.

The victim was transported to St. Joseph Hospital where he received initial treatment for multiple fractures of the jaw. Because of the extent of the injuries he sustained he was flown to an out of area hospital. He is expected to recover from those injuries.
