UPDATE, 4:09 p.m.: Humboldt Bay Fire press release:

Fire personnel conducted an investigation and found the cause to be from a faulty chest freezer. The fire damage was confined to one end of the structure and damage was estimated to be at roughly $10,000.Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a structure fire at 2255 Myrtle Avenue in Eureka at 0723 hours. Three engines, one ladder truck and two chief officers were dispatched.  The first arriving engine reported smoke coming from the eaves of a single story wood framed commercial building.  Crews forced entry into the structure while additional personnel cut a hole in the roof to release smoke and heat. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire, conducted a search for any victims and checked for extension into the remaining portion of the building. Once the fire was extinguished, burned debris was removed.

Seventeen firefighters and one fire support member responded. The fire was controlled within ten minutes from time of dispatch. Time on scene, less than one hour.

One call for service to an unrelated incident was received during the fire.

Arcata Fire Department provided one engine to cover the Humboldt Bay Fire jurisdiction.

LoCO contributor Mark McKenna tells us that Humboldt Bay Fire has extinguished an early morning blaze between Glenwood and Trinity. Myrtle Avenue is currently closed, says McKenna and the CHP.
