Eureka Police Dept. Press Release:
On November 8th, at approximately 7:24 PM, the Eureka Police Department, Humboldt Bay Fire and City Ambulance responded to Commercial Street at Broadway for the report of an injury traffic collision involving a vehicle and a bicycle. It was determined that the driver of the vehicle, Richard Delosada, of Eureka, was driving his Volkswagen Jetta northbound on Broadway and turned onto Commercial Street. Commercial Street is a one-way street for northbound traffic. Delosada was immediately confronted with a bicyclist, Pedro Vasquez Jr., of Eureka, riding the wrong way, in front of him. Delosada tried to avoid the collision, but despite his attempts, collided head-on with Vasquez. Vasquez was transported by ambulance to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was treated for a fractured knee cap, lacerations to his face and other minor injuries.
Vasquez was riding his black bicycle the wrong-way, without a headlight or reflectors, and he was not wearing a helmet.
Drugs and/or alcohol did not appear to play a role in this collision.
