CHP Press Release:

On August 31, 2013, just after 6 PM,  49 year old Creg Newman of Stilwell, Oklahoma was driving a 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on US-101, south of Kane Road.  Mr. Newman failed to negotiate a curve in the roadway, ran off the roadway, and struck a tree.  Mr. Newman suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.  The cause of the collision is under investigation.  At the time of the collision, Mr. Newman was wearing a non-DOT approved helmet.   

California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area officers responded to the scene and are conducting the investigation.  Emergency personnel from Cal-Fire, the Orick Volunteer Fire Department, and Arcata Ambulance also responded and provided emergency medical care. 

Returning travelers are expected to increase vehicle traffic on Humboldt County’s roadways this Labor Day.  The CHP reminds all motorists to drive safe and stay vigilant of errant drivers during this highly traveled Labor Day.
