He’s got the look. He’s got the chops. And clearly he’s beloved by our weird little corner of the globe.
LoCO readers officially love Arcata’s Dan Davis and his mighty fingers. He will thus now and forever more (or until we do this poll again) reign as Humboldt’s fav bass player. Most recently Davis has held down the low end for Humboldt musical excursions Wild Otis, Paranöid Andröid, The Grass Band and the Arcata Eye Ball Rockestra. He’ll probably start another band tomorrow. Oh shit, Paranöid Andröid changed its name to WAR MOTH? See what we mean?
Anywho, congrats, Dan. You are Humboldt Approved. Give him a little extra tonight, Jessica.

ORIGINAL POST: Your Lost Coast Outpost is happy to report that last week’s Humboldt Approved was one of our most popular topics ever — I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t have strong pizza opinions. Thanks for your votes, HumCo.
But this week, instead of capitalizing on that momentum by delivering another crowd pleasing category, let’s talk bass players. A few weeks back we had a lot of fun giving a spotlight to Humboldt’s drummers (hail Steve Bohner, long may he reign), so this week we thought, “Who gets even less glory than a drummer?” You can think of one local bass player, right? Time will tell.
You decide what equals good bass playing. Do crave busy, virtuosic runs up and down the neck? Or maybe you prefer steady eighth notes on the root? Electric? Standup? You decide who commands four strings most effectively.
Now, in a similar manner to how we prefaced our drummer poll, we will say that we are aware that “most popular” is not the same as “best” and this contest is just for fun so no one’s feelings should … eh, that was going to get boring. You get it. Whine less. As we restate every week, here’s how voting works (please read carefully):
To vote, look through the comments of this Humboldt Approved poll. If someone has already nominated the answer you would give for that week’s category, click the upvote arrow. If you don’t see your desired Humboldt Approved answer nominate it in a comment for others to upvote. (Please be careful to not duplicate answers; redundant answers will be deleted and potential associated upvotes will be lost.) Feel free to make your case by replying to/cheering on the answer you love most, but again the number by the arrows is what counts.
You can vote for as many nominees as you deem worthy but, of course, the more you do that the more watered down your initial vote becomes. That’s math.
We reserve the right to delete superfluous comments that make the voting/comment section hard to sift through. Please try not to get offended when your comment battle reply is deleted. We’re trying to do something here.
While most weeks we look for two winners — one winner from the metropolises of Eureka and Arcata, and one from Humboldt’s smaller communities — this time we’re gonna limit it to one. Voting closes next Friday at noon and soon after a winner will be declared. (Tip: Sort comments by “BEST” to get a better grasp of how voting is trending.)
If you read the directions — believe me, you will be in the minority — you may now proceed to the small town popularity contest. Joy!
