The main entrance of Eureka’s St. Bernard’s Catholic Church was set on fire shortly before 1 o’clock this morning, according to Capt. Watson of the Eureka Police Department.

Watson told the Outpost that the EPD was summoned to the scene, at the corner of Sixth and H streets, after the Eureka Fire Department determined that the blaze — which was knocked down quickly — was deliberately set. Physical evidence pointing to arson was recovered at the scene, Watson said, but no suspects have been identified as of yet.

Video techs will shortly be examining video evidence taken by surveillance cameras at the scene.

St. Bernard’s has had a rough year. It began, of course, with the horrific murder of Father Eric Freed in the church rectory, which was again invaded during the summer.
