UPDATE, 10 a.m.: Sgt. Ernie Stewart with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office updated the Outpost moments ago via phone. “For the moment the crisis has passed,” he said. “We’ve been able get our numbers down.” That’ said, many of these dogs still need a home for the holidays.

Over the weekend, the Humboldt County Animal Shelter posted the following message to its Facebook page:
URGENT! The shelter is at critical mass for the dogs right now. Bad weather, displacement of homeless camps plus who knows what else have resulted in an increase of incoming dogs. Dogs are passing the temperament testing and moving to Adoptable, but that system only works if adoption numbers keep up with the amount of dogs coming in. The shelter has not had to euthanize for space up till now; there will be no alternative unless there is movement out. Please help by sharing the Adoptable Dogs album and encouraging those friends that are “thinking about it” to act on an adoption. Rescue groups will do what they can to help but it costs to pull dogs out to boarding. We will update with any other information that comes our way.
Here’s a link to photos of the adoptable dogs. The shelter is located at 980 Lycoming Ave. in McKinleyville and 840-9132.
