UPDATE 10:30 p.m.: According to Captain Steve Watson of the Eureka Police Department, “Someone found an old shell” and “drove it” to the area near Highland Avenue. The street was blocked off and Street was blocked off and EOD [Explosive Ordance Disposal] was called.” The shell, Watson said, was then taken away for disposal.

A large contingent of law enforcement responded this evening to a report of a possible explosive device in Eureka near Highland Avenue and Glen Street. Residents reported that a section of the streets were blocked off.
According to Corporal Jesse Taylor of the Sheriff’s Office, the Humboldt County Sheriff’s bomb squad was requested by the Eureka Police Department to deal with a suspicious item. The item, Taylor said, a “shell” had been discovered and, as of 9 p.m. the bomb squad was “transporting the item to a safe location for destruction.”
