Six Rivers National Forest Service Press Release:

The 10-acre Sugarbowl Fire on the Lower Trinity Ranger District of the Six Rivers National Forest is expected to be 100% contained by 6:00 pm this evening. Although containment was originally expected for Sunday morning, a small spot fire from drifting embers was ignited across Highway 96. It was quickly extinguished by fire crews on site.

Full control of the Fire is expected by 6:00 pm Tuesday evening.

Cal Trans re-opened Highway 96 Sunday afternoon with no restrictions; they have debris removal equipment on site in case it is needed. Motorists should be aware of potential hazards of rocks or debris rolling down from the steep embankment on to the roadway and adjust their speed accordingly. Motorists are also cautioned that fire equipment and personnel are working near the roadway.

“We will continue to have engines patrolling for any hot spots and doing mop up,” said Forest Service Battalion Chief Paul Johnson.

Firefighters have been challenged by the rough, steep, rocky area which has made it difficult to fight this fire. There has been one minor injury.
