Arcata Police Department press release:
On 07/26/2014, at approximately 1:00 am, the Arcata Police Department received the report of a gunshot followed by a person yelling for help in the Wiley Court area of Sunny Brae.
Officers responded to the area and contacted a subject who reported an individual known to him, along with another man, had come to the residence to discuss a business matter. During the course of the conversation both guests produced handguns and demanded money. One of the residents fled out a door and one of the suspects pursued. The two became involved in a struggle outside the home and the suspect’s firearm discharged. The bullet from the gun passed through the resident’s shirt creasing his abdomen. Both suspects then fled on foot.
The resident of the home declined medical attention.
The suspect who fired the shot was identified as Joel Johnston, 24 of Willow Creek. The second suspect was described as a white male adult, 5’8” tall, with brown hair.
Anyone with information as to Johnston’s whereabouts, or the identity of the second suspect, is asked to call the Arcata Police Department at 822-2428
