UPDATE 7:27 p.m.: California Highway Patrol Press Release:
On 7/8/14 at approximately 2:06 pm, Garberville CHP received a call of a vehicle off the roadway near Redcrest, CA. The vehicle was a Toyota pickup being driven by an adult female, Heidi Schubert and occupied by an adult male passenger, no name at this time. The vehicle was traveling northbound on US-101, when for reasons still under investigation the vehicle ran off the east shoulder of the roadway and struck a tree head-on. Schubert was air lifted to an out of area hospital with major injuries and the male passenger was transported by ambulance to Redwood Memorial Hospital.
DUI appears to be factor in this collision.
Northbound traffic is being diverted onto SR-254 at the Dyerville exit and southbound traffic is down to one lane. The closure should be lifted within the hour. CHP thanks motorists for their patience while we investigate this traffic collision.
