UPDATE, 6/3: News Channel 3 reports that the driver involved in the incident described below has been identified as 67-year-old James Smith of Eureka. Police suspect that a medical issue played a part.

UPDATE, 1:15 p.m.: The Outpost’s Andrew Goff, on the scene, reports that Hodgson Street is closed between P and S.

EPD Sgt. Brian Stephens tells Goff that the driver was the only person in the truck. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, and the extent of his injuries are unknown.

Original Post: It’s one of those days in Eureka. 

About half and hour ago, a car crashed into a power pole on R Street between Hodgson and Everding. Power was knocked out to at least a few customers, though the PG&E outage map does not currently reflect that.

The driver of the car, callers reported, was unconscious by the crash. Scanner traffic indicated that Eureka Fire and at least one ambulance have responded to the scene. Streets have been blocked off.
