UPDATE 2:03 p.m.: Eureka Police Department press release:

On 11-28-2014, at about 4:27 pm, Eureka Police Department officers were dispatched to the report of an assault with a weapon near the Shanty Bar. 

Upon arrival, the officers located the victim in front of the bar. She had a large slash/cut across her right cheek. It was soon determined that the assault to place in the rear courtyard area of 216 3rd street. A description of the suspect was obtained along with a possible identity, Mark Nero.

Officers responded to the rear of 216 3rd Street and located Nero in the alleyway. Nero matched the description of the suspect and he was detained in handcuffs. When Nero was asked if he had any weapons, he admitted to having a knife on his person. The knife was taken from him for officer safety and evidentiary reasons.

Nero was subsequently identified [by] the victim and taken into custody for armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. (It was also determined that he demanded and took money from the victim during the assault).

The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment of her significant facial injuries.

According to scanner traffic, a woman was reported stabbed in the face about 4:30 yesterday afternoon near the Shanty on Third Street in Eureka. A responding officer later described the woman as having a slash on her right cheek. Medical personnel responded while officers searched for a white male adult suspect. The man reportedly ran into an apartment near the scene of the incident. We have not yet determined if an arrest was made.
