UPDATE 4:55 p.m.: California Highway Patrol press release:

We are currently at the scene of multiple collisions on US-101 in the area Tompkins Hill (College of the Redwoods).  Heavy rain and wet roadways combined with unsafe vehicle speed are a factor in each of these collisions.  US-101 in the area of Tomkins Hill is open to through traffic, but expect delays.  The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area reminds motorists to reduce your vehicle’s speed as rain is forecasted through the night and into the week.  Please help us reduce collisions by sharing through your media resources.  A full press release will follow.

Thanks to Facebook friend Jessica Celeri, who sends along this photo of what northbound 101 near College of the Redwoods currently looks like.

Ambulance and tow trucks are headed to the scene, according to the CHP. KHUM listeners are telling us that traffic is completely stopped.

Stay safe out there, folks.
