Flu season’s a-comin’, HumCo! The hardworking info-slingin’ wing of the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services will now inform you where and when you can get stuck:

The Department of Health and Human Services will begin offering flu immunization beginning Tuesday, Oct. 14, at its Public Health clinic at 529 I St. in Eureka.

A flu vaccine is needed every year to maintain existing immunity because flu viruses are constantly changing. It’s not unusual for new flu viruses to appear each year. The flu vaccine is formulated each year to keep up with the flu viruses as they change.

The cost of the flu vaccine is $17, although no one will be turned away for inability to pay. Medicare is accepted.  Flu immunization is offered by appointment only. Appointments will be scheduled for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:15 to 4 p.m.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older be vaccinated. It usually takes two weeks after receiving the flu vaccine to achieve the best protection.

There is more you can do to prevent the spread of the flu in addition to getting a flu shot. Health officials recommend practicing the “3 Cs”: Clean your hands, cover your nose and mouth when you sneeze or cough and contain your germs by staying home if you get sick.
