PREVIOUSLY: Sheriff’s Office Stand Off; Man Refusing to Exit Cutten Residence (UPDATING/AUDIO)


From the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

On 09-23-2014, at approximately 2:30 p.m. the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by a father, who resided on Herron Road, Eureka who reported his 29 year old son had assaulted a 19 year old male neighbor earlier today. The father reported his son had a history of mental illness and was continuing to act aggressively and was alone in the father’s residence, the family vacated the home fearing for their safety. The Sheriff’s Office was familiar with the 29 year old male from previous contacts and was aware of his mental health background. During previous contacts the 29 year male had indicated he wished to have law enforcement take his life and had made comments about wanting to kill law enforcement officers.

Deputies responded to the residence and met with the father, wife and daughter outside the home. The family indicated they wanted their sons welfare checked and removed from the residence. California Highway Patrol and Eureka Police Officers also responded to assist .The family told the deputies the son was barricaded in the home. There were knives in the home, but no firearms.

Deputies attempted contact with the 29 year old son from outside the home with no success. Deputies trained in crisis negotiations, along with two mental health crisis negotiators and a Eureka Police Crisis Negotiator responded to the scene and attempted to dialogue with the barricaded 29 year old male. The 29 year old male indicated he was not going come out and was alright. The father and family members discussed options with deputies and decided to leave the residence for the evening to let their son calm down. They did not wish to pursue any charges against their son.

Law Enforcement left the residence and told the family to re-contact the Sheriff’s Office if further assistance was needed.

On 9-23-2014, at approximately 9:00 p.m. the family returned to the residence and located their son still inside the residence. The son was still acting aggressively and making threats, and was now barricaded in a back room. The son told the family if police were called again there would be problems. The family was concerned for their safety and their son’s mental health. The requested deputies respond and remove him from the home.

Deputies arrived and met with family members outside the residence. Deputies entered the home and located the 29 year old male, standing in his bedroom with the door partially open. Deputies were able to take him into custody without incident. After the son was detained, deputies located three knives in his possession when they searched him. He was transported to Humboldt County Mental Health for treatment.
