As the local Calfire office notes above, today’s news is mostly OK for the 250-acre Horse Fire, which sparked to life three days ago up north of Shelter Cove on the King Range. The incident command page for the fire notes that 271 firefighters, 10 engines, seven bulldozers and six helicopters are assigned to the fire, the cause of which is still under investigation.

However, this morning the Bureau of Land Management, the federal agency that runs the King Range, announced that it is closing many of the trails and amenities in the conservation area, including the popular Lost Coast Trail, the Paradise Royale Bike Trail and many others.

From the Bureau of Land Management:

Several roads, trails and campgrounds in the King Range National Conservation Area on California’s Lost Coast are temporarily closed because of a 250-acre wildfire.

The Bureau of Land Management said the Lost Coast, Buck Creek, King Crest, Miller Loop, Lightning, Rattlesnake Ridge, Horse Mountain Creek, Cooskie Creek and Paradise Royale Mountain Biking trails are closed for public safety, along with the Tolkan and Horse Mountain campgrounds and the King Peak, King Range and Saddle Mountain roads.

The Horse Fire, about six miles northeast of Shelter Cove, has burned about 250 acres and is ten percent contained. The fire broke out Tuesday, Aug. 18. The cause is under investigation.

Fire engines, bulldozers and hand crews are fighting the fire, assisted by water-dropping helicopters and air tankers..

Current information updates are available on the Cal Fire incident website: http://cdfdata.fire.ca.gov/incidents/incidents_current

Campgrounds and trails south of Shelter Cove Road remain open and available. Information is available at www.blm.gov/ca/arcata/kingrange.
